Making Melinex Book Jackets

Safeguard your books in no time.

Making Melinex® Book Jackets

A simple jacket may be used to cover books without paper dust jackets. This clear jacket permits a book title to be seen through the cover while protecting against fingerprints, dust and abrasions. It can also be used to contain the red-rot associated with leather deterioration. In addition, the jacket provides a surface for self-adhesive labels, reducing the need to attach a label to the book itself.

The following materials are recommended for constructing book jackets:
 "" Melinex®, 3mil or 4mil
 "" Metal-edged ruler
 "" Bone/Teflon® folders
 "" Scissors
 "" Cutting mat

Cut a strip of Melinex to the height of the textblock and three times textblock width, plus book’s total thickness.
Wrap the film around
the book so that the ends are even.
Using a bone or Teflon® folder, crease marks along fore-edge of book covers. Make crease marks at edge of spine, making sure Melinex film does not shift on book

On a cutting mat, line ruler up with dent marks and use folder to crease Melinex film, making sure creases are parallel. Fold along lines using folder to ensure a crisp fold.
Apply tape to both ends of the book jacket cover; making sure that the book is secure.
Smooth with a bone folder.
